This morning I was called, by a rather desperate daughter, to rescue Ritchie the goldfish, whose tail had been sucked into the motor. Don’t even ask me how this is possible, but it was. The poor thing.
Fortunately it wasn’t a day when I was needing to get somewhere in a hurry as I was coaching clients over Skype today. I could deal with it, get the girls to school and still get to my first appointment on time.
I got thinking how, even though we try and separate our home life from business, what happens in one feeds through to the other.
You could be rushing out the door in time for an important meeting, and the cat throws up on your jacket!
You wake up in the morning and check your work emails as you walk down the passage to get breakfast – yes, there are people that do this (let’s not name any)- check emails before they’ve really woken up!
Life has got busy, there is no longer a defined line between what is work-time and what is home-time.
Yes, there are advantages to being able to use email, Facebook and LinkedIn on our mobiles, but it also comes at a cost. If you don’t get clear on what is important to you, you end up being busy rather than doing business. There is no down-time. Emails even follow you on holiday. Challenges at home interrupt your work schedule. Your work schedule interrupts time with your family.
That’s why it’s important to get clear on what you want, what your goals are, and how you want your life to look.
Do you want to be busy, chasing your tail and end up feeling like you are going no-where?
Or would you rather be happier, have more energy and be excited to get up in the morning?
I’m off to buy another goldfish….
Enjoy the rest of your day,
Kind regards
Jill Hutchison
