Work-life balance is a Myth! Yes, you heard me! Striving for balance in life is setting yourself up for failure and frustration that you don’t have balance in your life.
The old notion of balance being like a see-saw, with each side precariously level and at risk of being thrown off balance, really doesn’t appeal to me. This is one of the main reasons why we called our company Evolve Dynamic. The world is evolving. The earth is turning, everything is in constant movement. We are in a dynamic environment (even if it doesn’t always feel like it!)
The tides ebb and flow, the moon waxes and wanes. The sun rises and sets. The wind either blows so gently we can hardly feel it, or it blows in various degrees and at various speeds. Everything around us is in constant movement.
In the same way as you can sit in an aircraft, cruising at a million miles an hour, totally relaxed, with a glass of wine or your favourite food or beverage – I like to use this visual as equilibrium – balance in motion! It’s so much more fun to have a dynamic life, with both ups and downs and with curve balls thrown at us from time to time!
Evolve Dynamic – improve, develop, stretch – in such a way as to be exciting or dynamic. How much more fun is it if we can grow, develop and have perfect equilibrium while still going places at speed? You become more resilient and flexible when you’re at equilibrium rather than precariously balanced.
Aiming to have a static balance: Everything perfectly in its place, doing things the same way every week, month or year. Everything perfectly planned out. This is just setting yourself up to be frustrated. As soon as everything gets all straightened out, something will happen to upset the apple cart. If you have kids, the apple cart gets upset twice as often, with even more upheaval than ever before!
There is no such thing as work-life balance. You can’t give 50% to work and 50% to life. You only have one life! When you’re working, give 100% to work. When you’re with your family, give 100% to your family. When you’re relaxing, then relax and recharge 100%. Trying to split yourself up to ‘balance’ work and home is a fruitless exercise.
Get clear on what you really, really want in your life. If you like fun, then think what your ideal day would look like if you had as much time and money as you’d like. What would your ideal week look like? Ideal year?
You have no idea what a relief you’ll feel when you drop balance from your vocabulary – and substitute it with something that you can actually succeed at and maintain. Try it today and let me know how it feels!
