Why Leaders Need a Gratitude Practice in 2025
Gratitude is often talked about in books, podcasts, and videos—but why is it such a big deal? Why, when work feels overwhelming or challenges keep piling up, should you stop and write down what you’re grateful for?
One colleague once asked me, “Can’t I just list all the things that are going wrong in this office?”
Here’s the thing: focusing on what’s going well isn’t about ignoring problems—it’s about raising your vibration and mindset so you can respond more effectively to challenges. Our bodies and minds operate at different frequencies, just like water changes state from ice to steam. By focusing on gratitude, we consciously shift to a higher, more productive state.
Think of it like this: picture a large sheet of white paper with a small black dot in the center. Most people immediately fixate on the dot, forgetting that 99.5% of the page is actually white space. Gratitude helps us “see the white space”—the opportunities, wins, and positives that are always there, even in challenging times.
How to Practice Gratitude Effectively
-
Write it down: Begin each sentence with “I’m so happy and grateful for…” or “I’m so happy and grateful that I have…”
-
Aim for 30 items: Challenge yourself to really think broadly, including both personal and professional aspects of your life.
-
Engage your senses: Writing by hand, seeing the words on the page, and reading them aloud all reinforce the message to your subconscious mind.
-
Consistency matters: Daily practice creates repetition, which rewires your mindset to naturally focus on abundance rather than scarcity.
Even if it feels simple—or even a little silly at first—the results are powerful. Leaders who practice gratitude report better focus, reduced stress, improved decision-making, and stronger relationships.
